Striped Keelback

The Striped Keelback is a small, harmless non-venomous snake with distinctive longitudinal stripes running along its body. It is one of the most abundant snakes in wet habitats across India, particularly during the monsoon season.

This semi-aquatic snake feeds on frogs, toads, tadpoles, and small fish. It is commonly found in and around rice paddies, marshes, and wet grasslands where its prey is abundant. The keeled (ridged) scales on its body help it move efficiently through grass and shallow water.

Striped Keelbacks are docile and rarely bite even when handled. They are harmless to humans and are actually beneficial in agricultural settings where they help control frog and insect populations. Their small size (usually under 60 cm) and gentle nature make them one of the most inoffensive snakes in India.
